Historical fencing, HEMA, sword fencing, sword fighting, historical combat? The list goes on and on. At its core remains a fascination with swords and combat. For around 20 years, those interested in combat have been studying traditions that date back to the Middle Ages. In the beginning, the focus was on understanding and trying out the traditional pieces and reviving the fencing techniques. In the meantime, it has also become a real martial art, with national and international competitions where participants can measure their skills against each other. There are new types of fencing weapons that have been specially designed for sporting purposes, as well as new types of protective equipment. This makes historical fencing the best combination of historical martial arts and modern combat sports.

Advanced course in historical fencing
In the second semester of historical fencing, we build on the basics learned in the first semester. Therefore, the prerequisite for the course is that you have already completed a basic course in historical fencing or Olympic fencing.
In the first part of the advanced course, you will learn how to use your second hand to wield the weapon. To do this, we will first use a sword and buckler (small round shield) to learn how to use both hands.
Following on from the basics of two-handed weapons from part 1, in this part you will learn how to use a long sword. Here, too, both hands are used, but not independently, rather on one weapon.
